The Magical Reality of Audio Holography In Headphones

Super X-Fi™ is a new renaissance in headphone audio; a technology where the science of sound brings the human listening experience with headphones to a whole new enlightened level of realism.

Every person is unique so why should music be any different. Why settle for canned sound? We can’t beat nature - a person only has two ears. It’s all a person needs to hear sound in its natural multi-dimensional form. And because we all perceive sound uniquely based on the uniqueness of our anatomical dimensions, headphone audio should be customized to fit each person, where what we hear sounds exactly the way it should.

Imagine capturing the listening experience of a high-end multi-speaker system in a studio and actually re-creating that same expansive experience - the same depth, detail, soundstage, three dimensionality, immersiveness and realism. It’s like the magic of 3D holography, but in audio - for the headphones.

How The Magic of Super X-Fi™ Works

The quest for this holy grail of audio has involved many man-years of research, massive data analysis of room acoustics, human anthropometry, and headphone dynamics. Super X-Fi™ is a computationally intensive and algorithmically complex technology.

We custom fit audio to the individual by the advanced Head and Ear Mapping of each person by using real-time image detection and analysis from the camera on a mobile phone. This technique maps hundreds of anthropological features in high-precision. An artificial intelligence (AI) engine then extracts these features and merges it with the mapping of the acoustics of a three dimensional space to personalize sound just for you.

Using this acoustic map, Super X-Fi™ recreates the audio holography to give you a breathtaking listening experience for headphones. It’s as good as the real thing!

Custom X-Fi Ultra SOC

To realize this technology, a custom SOC (system-on-chip) was designed. This culminated in the Superthreaded Floating Point X-Fi UltraDSP SOC, packing 5 times more computing and digital signal processing power than Creative’s most powerful Sound Blaster chip while consuming less than half the power. This SOC is highly integrated with megabytes of fast memory so it can decode and process 8 channels of high resolution 24 bit 96KHz audio simultaneously and play them through its integrated audiophile quality DACs, exceeding 100dB SNR (signal to noise ratio) of dynamic range.

Miniaturized Solutions

With this juxtaposition of technology, everything can be compacted into a form factor no larger than a finger. Forget the analog headphone jack – go with fully digital headphones with all the Super X-Fi™ goodness straight from your phone. And that’s not all, we are also creating an app for the phone that gives you a sample of the experience before the hardware solutions roll-out. Watch out for it!

Hey we’re still at CES 2018, and I just finished the best demo of the show.

It's not a curved TV, it’s not 8K it is… Wait for it, Creative Labs’ new Super X-Fi technology that they’re calling basically “holography for your ears”.

In the demo I did, we modelled by putting microphones in the ears, then we modelled the entire room using a Dolby Atmos 5.1.2 system. Then we listened to clips from that multi-thousand dollar reference speaker — Elac reference speakers, and compared them to just headphones with what will eventually go into a little tiny dongle.

And it just floors you.

You can take the headphones off, listening to again; a three— or four—thousand Dolby Atmos system, and put the headphones on, and it will sound just as good.

In fact for my ears, I gotta say, it sounded better. And I think that’s because it’s tough to get that kind of good audio in a room like this at CES. So not optimal for the speakers. At the same time, most people’s homes are not the best for it. Headphones though, are their own rooms around your ears.

How exactly does this technology work?

They are basically putting in some kind of magical modelling into this Super X-Fi chip that makes audio that sounds normally pretty flat — good, to make it sound like you’re sitting at the front row of a concert.

It really did sound as good as reference speakers on a Dolby Atmos system with just headphones.

Interviewer: How does it work, do you just plug it in?

How does it work — It will work just by simply plugging it in. They’re going to have — you plug it into your phone, and the other end can probably go into a standard 3.5mm jack. They’re saying spec-ed [sic] product amazingly about 150 bucks sometime this summer.

The demo again I did, we actually used microphones plugged into the ear to build profiles of how my actual head, ears, and all the fat in my head sounds. That is sort of the pinnacle of what they eventually wanna get to.

For now though, they’re gonna say you’re gonna buy this thing, we’re gonna have an application on your phone. You take pictures of your ear canal, both sides, your big fat face, and then they have algorithms that will match up with your head, your bone shape and your ears.

Not gonna be as good as modelling with the microphones, but they’re saying they’re gonna be able to achieve 85% of what they’re doing by modelling with the microphones in ear.

I’ve gotta say — if they can hit 85% of what I’ve just heard, it’s gonna be a steal at $150. I personally can’t wait to get this product this summer.
